Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a natural latex mattress?

Latex is a viscous liquid that exists within most plants – for industrial use however, the Hevea rubber plant has been the primary source for the natural latex we utilize today. A natural latex mattress contains natural latex as its primary component, and as a result offers a host of advantages that are innate to this material. Latex rubber is incredibly strong and durable, conforming, antimicrobial and hypoallergenic as well as biodegradable.

Q: How ‘natural’ is a natural latex mattress?

It depends on the manufacturer – but at Tranquility Mattresses our products are 100% pure. Aside from natural botanically latex, the other main component of the mattress is air; purified (and then recycled) water – not harsh solvents or chemicals - is used to wash mattresses after the production process. And of course, latex is a renewable material that makes our mattress an eco-friendly and fully sustainable product.

Q: What’s the difference between a Talalay latex mattress and a Dunlop latex mattress?

Both mattresses use a similar technique to mix, aerate, mold and set the mattress, but Talalay latex adds two extra steps that create uniform air bubbles within its structure and then freeze them in place. Industry experts have found the Talalay mattress to be more consistent in its support and more pliable to the touch.

Q: So is a natural latex mattress like a viscoelastic ‘memory’ foam mattress?

In many cases it’s better. In terms of pressure relief, it is about 31% more effective. It does conform like memory foam, but does away with the ‘sinking’ feeling and heat retention that people complain about with memory foam. A natural latex mattress supports you in any position and adjusts on the fly as you move while you sleep. And best of all, a natural latex mattress is not synthetic and is completely chemical-free.

Q: Why should I buy my mattress from Tranquility Mattresses?

Tranquility Mattresses offers only the finest natural mattresses on the market today. Our mattresses are certified by Oeko-Tex (Europe’s highest environmental standard for consumer products) to be completely chemical-free. We are also dedicated to our customers and their lifestyle goals, and offer a superlative customer service and online resources to help guide them to the right mattress as well as learn more about the technology and green living.

Q: Where are your mattresses made?

Our mattresses are made in the USA with Talatech® latex – the only latex made entirely in this country – to ensure that you receive a superior product. We keep tight control of the manufacturing process so that every mattress meets our standard and that you only receive the best possible sleep experience. This would be impossible if we had to rely on importing our mattresses from abroad.

Q: Do you offer a free trial?

We do, because we are sure you will love your natural mattress enough to keep it. Our 180-day no risk trial allows you test out one of our mattresses at no cost to you (including the shipping) – if you are unsatisfied for any reason you can return the mattress within the 180-day period. This does not cover pillows or toppers, and if you damage the mattress in any way (rips, tears, or the smell of smoke) you will not receive full credit.

Q: Do I even need a new mattress?

8 years is around the standard time it takes for a mattress to start losing its effectiveness – but there is no exact shelf life or science because there are so many types of mattresses out there and every sleeper is different. The best way to really know if you need a new mattress is by reflecting on your own sleep experience. Overall, how much do you enjoy sleeping in your current bed? If you were to lie down right now, what would be your chief complaints? Sleep problems, lack of sleep and physical pain are good indicators that you need a new (or new kind of) mattress.

Q: What’s this I hear about latex allergies?

In the 1990’s, latex made the headlines when some people experienced allergies stemming from poorly manufactured mattresses that were created in countries with less than strict standards. Tranquility Mattresses has never experienced an incident as our mattresses are made in the USA and are painstakingly washed through a five-stage process that removes potentially reaction-causing proteins. And when it comes to overall allergies, you will not find any other type of mattress that is as naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, bacteria, mold and mildew. If you still have concerns, then you may wish to consult a physician.

Q: How do I start my mattress search?

Our Buyer’s Guide is an excellent place to begin your research into natural latex, its inherent advantages, the manufacturing process and the sleep experience. We offer five distinct models to choose from that you can consider – detailed descriptions and images will help you decide which one is right for you.

Q: What do you charge for shipping?

Nothing at all. We ship completely free to all neighboring 48 states. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, we welcome you to contact us so we can explain more about our shipping policies to these destinations.

Q: How soon after I order will you deliver my mattress?

You will receive your mattress within 8-12 business days.

Q: Can I return my mattress if I do not like it?

You can if you follow the rules of our 180-day no risk trial. After this period, we make the conclusion that you are happy with your purchase.

Q: How can I pay for my mattress?

You can pay with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Money Orders and Cashiers Check with prior approval are also accepted.

Q: Is there an adjustment period for my new mattress?

For most people there is an adjustment period with any kind of new mattress. Your body needs to get accustomed to an unfamiliar sleep surface. While some people immediately feel the benefits of a natural latex mattress, some may require several days or a few weeks to get there. We always recommend that you give your natural latex mattress from Tranquility Mattresses at least 30 days to show its strengths and allow your body to adapt.

Q: Will my Tranquility Mattress make me hot while I sleep?

A major component of a natural latex foam mattress is a network of tiny air bubbles that not only maintains a buoyant sleep surface but also allows for breathability. Unlike some memory foam options, our mattress will not retain heat nor make you overheat during your sleep cycle.

Q: I have heard a good mattress will keep me in alignment and take care of pressure relief. What is this?

Your body’s alignment is crucial – when your shoulders, back and hips are not aligned properly, you will wake up stiff and or in pain. When there is pressure on your body from poor positioning, it also weakens the circulation of blood and oxygen to your extremities (a common cause of tossing and turning). Our mattresses are excellent in keeping you in alignment and redistributes pressure seamlessly – as a result it can help with treating sleeplessness from back pain, joint pain, restless leg syndrome and other alignment or pressure related conditions.

Q: I have a back problem. Can you guarantee your mattress will fix it?

While our mattresses are well known for their ability to relieve pressure from all parts of your body, everyone’s circumstances are unique. If you are experiencing chronic or severe back aches or pains anywhere else in your body, it is always best to consult a physician or a chiropractor before investing in any mattress.

Q: What do I need to do to care for my mattress?

Your natural latex foam mattress is virtually maintenance free. Over and over again this mattress will return to its original shape, and then conform again to your body and your sleep position when you go back to bed. You do not need to flip or turn your mattress. All you need to do is keep your low-maintenance, durable mattress cover clean via machine washing and your bed will feel like new all the time.

Q: Do you offer a warranty?

Of course we do, and it’s a long one. We offer a 20-year Limited Warranty, which means that you get a 100% 10-year warranty and a 50% 10-year warranty following that. It’s one of the most competitive warranties that you can get for any mattress from any company.
